STAGE 3 OF 7 · TEAM, OR NO TEAM
You own the kart; the team runs it on race weekends. The middle path most regional families take.
For kids and adults · ages Any · parent role: reading a book, the mechanic · $750–900 / weekend
A tent program: you own the kart and keep it at home or with the team, and on race weekends the team’s mechanics prep it, set it up, and coach. You pay a weekend fee plus parts.
What it costs
| Item | This year |
|---|---|
| Regional weekend tent fee, typical | $750–900 |
| Two drivers under a tent | $1,500–2,000 |
| Personal mechanic, per day | $450 + travel (what we pay) |
| Transport of your kart (some teams) | $300 round trip |
Why you’d do it
- Professional setup and a second set of eyes on the data
- Someone else’s problem at 7am
- Keeps the kid’s weekend about driving
Why you might not
- $5–9k a season on top of everything else
- You’ll be sold parts, tires and chassis; that’s the business
- Easy to stop learning the kart yourself
Things to think about
- Club racing rarely needs a tent; regional usually does
- Ask how many karts each mechanic runs on a race day
Your job as the parent
Help as much or as little as you want. Some parents wrench alongside the mechanic; some read.
